Ever since being in the photography business I have seen people do Christmas mini sessions. And up to this year I haven’t participated in them. BUT 2019 was the year to start and boy am I glad I did!
This year I came up with the most amazing Christmas mini set! (haha, I may be a bit bias but I was told it was pretty cute!) I borrowed this amazing teal vintage truck the owners call “Mater” and got them to park it down in the beautiful Walkamow area in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Mater made everyone smile who came out for the sessions! I borrowed some greenery, birch sticks and a stunning winter wreath from the talented Flower Station in down town Moose Jaw. It was the perfect addition to the vintage props I borrowed from a friend. My friends also had a vintage sled, a full antler set, old logs, an old milk containers and several rustic clay (at least I think they were clay) jars all that I could borrow that were all perfect addition to the vintage truck. I added cozy blankets, pops of traditional red colors, fax fur pillow, and accent pillows with deer on them. Yup, everything pulled together for a super cute Christmas mini backdrop for this year!
These sessions were a challenge for me for a few reasons, but I knew to grow as a photograph, I needed to challenge myself every once and awhile. So what were the challenges? Well for one thing and the biggest, these sessions were 15 mins each. Normally I like to spend at least 20 minutes with my clients because it usually takes about 15 minutes for people to warm up and feel comfortable in front of the camera. My fav amount of time to spend with clients is around that hour mark to really cover a lot of poses, combinations with that traditional and lifestyle feel and to make sure my clients feel comfortable. So 15 minutes was a stretch for me, but I am so happy to say that I captured and delivered around 80-100 proof images for each client to pick from! It also proved to me that I can deliver a variety of poses in a short time if I need to. An example would be on a wedding day if things fall behind.
Second challenge was the date. It was early December, which meant chillier weather. Although the weekend that the sessions were on was actually quite nice, it was still chilly for the kids especially in their cute little outfits. By the end their cheeks and noses were pretty rosy and chilly. I will be the first to admit that I DON’T like the cold! Even as I write this now I have warm cloths on with a blanket wrapped around my legs and a scarf around my neck. For these sessions I ordered heated mitts from Amazon and they worked pretty good! They were a bit bulky to change settings quickly, but sure did help though out the day for my cold fingertips. If you were wondering what mitts I ordered, you can check them out here. So next year I do these sessions, and yes, there will be a next time, I will do these sessions in the fall, so all the cute kids, families and couples won’t be as chilly. Yes the snow may not be there, but I think people will like the warmer temperatures instead. But let me know your thought about that in the comments below? Fall with warmer temperatures or with snow and chilly temperatures?
Third challenge was after the sessions, there were so many super cute families, kids and couples that I had a hard time picking teasers! This challenge was a good challenge to have though! Now, I can’t not wait till next year!
